How to Use a Vanilla Bean
Use a sharp pairing knife to split the bean open lengthwise.
Scrape out the seeds on the inside with the back of your knife - we like to call this “vanilla caviar.”
1 Vanilla Bean = 1 tbsp Vanilla Extract
But what about when to use a vanilla bean?
We recommend that you start by substituting a vanilla caviar for any of your favorite recipes that call for vanilla extract and seeing how the change in ingredients brings depth. If you have the time, try making your favorite cookie or ice cream recipe with extract and beans then compare them blind. In our office ice cream tests, vanilla bean ice cream usually comes out on top.
